        What Are Neck Lines?

Neck lines, or platysmal bands, are characterized by deep-set creases across your neck. Neck lines develop as you age but are particularly prominent among older individuals.

While there are preventative measures you can take to make your neck lines less visible, the best treatment for neck lines typically involves undergoing minimally invasive cosmetic procedures like the ones we offer at Skin Matters.

        What Causes Neck Lines?

Take a moment, if you will, and place your hand on your neck and notice how thin and delicate the skin is. Taking these factors into consideration, it's easy to understand why your neck line is particularly vulnerable to showing signs of aging.

The natural aging process primarily causes neck lines; over time, the loosening of the platysma muscle weakens your skin tissue and develops lines and folds. Neck lines are also caused by genetics, sun damage, dramatic weight loss, repetitive movements, and lifestyle factors such as smoking. Combining one or more factors can accelerate neck line formation among men and women alike.

What Treatments Are Available for Neck Lines?

        Botox/Xeomin Injections

Due to their ability to quickly and effectively treat unwanted facial lines, both Botox® and Xeomin are the most popular treatments for signs of aging in North America. Historically it has been used mainly in the upper face, but now it is used anywhere on the face, neck, and even the décolleté.

Botox/Xeomin are purified non-animal proteins derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Expertly injected into select face and neck muscles, it induces temporary relaxation of the muscles, which helps soften unwanted expression lines and minimize any depressive or "pulled-down" appearance.

        Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are high-quality injectables, some with powerful ingredients boosting collagen and elastin production. A popular treatment for neck lines, dermal fillers help soften them by adding volume and promoting hydration. If you get dermal fillers as part of your neck line treatment, your skin will be smoother, and your neck lines won't look as deep.

        Radiesse

The main ingredient in Radiesse® is smooth calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA), which stimulates collagen and elastin production for up to one year post-injection. This neckline treatment restores the natural contours of your neck. A popular injectable filler, Radiesse® offers immediate results, and it is ideal for deep neck lines.

        Morpheus8

The Morpheus8 treatment uses microneedling to go beneath the skin and delivers a pulse of radiofrequency energy that tightens loose skin, reduces unwanted fat, and smooths the texture of your skin.

Morpheus8 is a fractional skin treatment that stimulates the collagen production of the underlying layers of the dermis. Radiofrequency energy is a scientifically proven and minimally invasive method for effectively stimulating new collagen production. The micro pins are able to renew the deeper layers of the skin with nearly no patient downtime.

        EXION RF Face & Body

Exion™ Face & Body is a non-invasive face and body contouring procedure that uses ultrasound and radiofrequency technology to stimulate collagen formation and improve the skin's overall texture. Exion promotes collagen production and tightens the skin, which addresses skin laxity concerns. It is also the only device on the market to increase hyaluronic acid production, leaded to more plump and hydrated skin.

        Exilis

Exilis ULTRA 360™ is a completely non-invasive face & body contouring procedure. This treatment uses ultrasound and radiofrequency heating technology to stimulate collagen formation and improve the skin's overall texture.

Exilis uses ultrasound and radio-frequency heating technology to promote collagen and tighten the skin, resulting in improved appearance of lines, loss of elastin (loose skin), and unwanted areas of fat. It is suitable for all genders, all skin types and any part of the body.

        Mesotherapy

Micro Droplet Therapy, sometimes referred to as Mesotherapy or Micro Filler, uses pure Hyaluronic acid (Skin Matters uses JUVÉDERM®) to promote skin rejuvenation and skin tightening through a series of injections into the skin's middle layer (mesoderm). This treatment instantly improves the look of skin but effectively filling in any visible signs of aging.

        Thermage

Patients also consider pursuing Thermage® for neck line removal. This treatment method is another noninvasive, minimal-downtime option that firms and smooths your skin using radiofrequency technology. Thermage® heats your skin tissue and stimulates new collagen production for up to six months post-treatment. Only one session is needed to achieve the skin-tightening benefits of Thermage®, and results can last for up to two years.

        Ultherapy

Similar to Thermage®, Ultherapy® lifts the skin on your neck and delivers a long-lasting lift in a single session. This non-invasive neck line treatment involves no downtime. By combining real-time imaging with a microfocused ultrasound, Ultherapy® stimulates collagen production, improves skin elasticity, and tightens loose skin. It does so by reaching your skin's Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System (SMAS) layer.

Are You a Candidate for Neck Line Treatments?

You could be a good candidate for neck line treatments at Skin Matters if:

        • You have platysmal bands and/or a less-than-defined jawline
        • You are in good health
        • You want to avoid surgery

After reviewing these and other factors, our doctors can determine if you are eligible

to undergo one or more non-invasive or minimally invasive neck line treatments at our clinic.

How to Prepare for Neck Line Treatment

We'll send you a list of preparation instructions prior to your treatment session. Please review these carefully and let us know if you have any questions.

If you are taking certain medications or supplements, we may ask you to stop taking them. We'll also ask you to clean your skin with a mild, gentle cleanser on the day of your appointment. Drink plenty of water, avoid smoking, and, on the day of your appointment, give yourself plenty of time to arrive at our clinic and check-in.

What's the Recovery Time After a Neck Line Treatment?

Different neck line treatments have different recovery times. A majority of them—such as dermal fillers—require minimal to no downtime.

No matter what non-surgical neck line treatment(s) you undergo at Skin Matters, it's worth noting that most do involve mild side effects such as swelling and mild discomfort. Depending on the treatment you get and how you feel once it's over, you may feel ready to resume your day as normal, or you might appreciate spending the day resting and recovering. Remember, Skin Matters is here for you throughout your recovery. Please contact us if you have any questions or need any post-treatment reassurances.

How Many Sessions of Neck Line Treatment Do You Need?

The number of treatment sessions for neck line removal depends entirely on the degree of your neck line treatment option you and your provider agree you should undergo to achieve your desired aesthetic outcomes. Some treatment options only require one session, while others will require you to return to Skin Matters every so often for maintenance sessions that will help you retain your results over the long term.

During your consultation, our team at Skin Matters will help you better understand how many treatments you'll need.

How Do I Prevent Neck Lines?

Some preventative measures you can take to reduce the look of neck lines include:

        • Neck exercises. Tone your neck muscles and increase blood flow by doing neck exercises and face yoga. These exercises are readily available on YouTube but can only prevent new wrinkles, not eliminate existing wrinkles.
        • Use moisturizers or serums with Vitamin A (retinol). Vitamin A in the form of Retinol helps cell regeneration and can reverse the signs of aging. It is a powerhouse ingredient that stimulates collagen and promotes cell turnover. Vitamin C is also an effective option by using antioxidant and antiaging properties.
        • Exfoliate your neck. Paying attention to washing, exfoliating, and moisturizing your neck as much as your face will remove dead cells that can make your skin look more dull and aged. Remember: What you do to your face, always do to your neck!
        • Try fillers and injectables. Dermal fillers plump up the skin, and when paired with Botox injections, can smooth out the neck. Both options are a great way to reduce the look of neck lines and are a great measure to prevent new wrinkles from forming.
        • Wear sunscreen. An SPF of at least 30 is necessary to protect your skin any time you go outdoors.

Stay hydrated and eat well. Nutrition and hydration to the body improve your interior and exterior health! Drink plenty of water to draw out toxins and eat a balanced diet that provides your body and skin with nutrients.

        Neck Line FAQs

Are Lines on the Neck Permanent?

Neck lines are a normal part of aging, and once they form, they can only have their appearance reduced via dermal fillers, Botox injections, non-invasive treatments, or surgery. Skin naturally loses elasticity, especially after being exposed to UV rays, over time. Neck lines can also form due to repeatedly looking at your phone or laptop ("tech neck"), smoking, and not using effective skincare.

At What Age Do Neck Lines Appear?

Neck lines and signs of aging can start to appear in your 20s or 30s, but most people report noticing prominent lines on their necks around 50.

How Long Will the Results of Neck Line Treatments Last?

Individual results vary based on your facial anatomy, metabolism, and other factors, such as how well you take care of your skin. Based on the procedure you undergo, your results can last anywhere from half a year to up to two or more. Once your results start to fade, you can return to Skin Matters for another neck line removal treatment.

Which Treatment is Most Effective for Deep Neck Lines?

The most effective treatment for deep neck lines is a neck lift, which surgically removes excess fat from the neck. Many people, however, don't want to pursue surgery for various reasons, such as the significant cost and lengthy downtime. That's why they turn to non-surgical procedures, which offer quicker recovery times and fewer risks.

That said, if you have deep neck lines, we may recommend Ultherapy®, which can reach the SMAS layer of your skin. Combining treatments is another excellent treatment for neck lines. The best treatment for neck lines will increase volume and firmness in the neck area, and our team of experts can make excellent recommendations for you to consider.
